Elizabeth: I got into the goddess movement, becoming friends with women who were all body sizes, who were absolutely beautiful. I saw a whole different way of being.
For the next two years I ate whatever I wanted, guilt free. I had to heal thirty-year-old wounds of equating my worth as a person with what I ate. Then I decided to become a vegetarian. It seemed like the healthy, natural thing to do.
My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant since my daughter was about two, and I was concerned about not having periods. So I went to fertility specialists and endocrinologists. They all focused on my weight and told me to go on a low-fat, high-carbo diet. I’d say, “That’s what I’m eating. I’m a vegetarian.”
They’d say, “Well, you need to exercise.”
I’ve always exercised. So I’d reply, “I swim and walk.”
They’d go, “Yeah, uh-huh.”
They were disgusted by me. I was the pig of the world and they couldn’t stand dealing with me. I’d walk out of doctors’ offices thinking, “You have no idea how beautiful I am.”
It was the most painful, abusive period of my life. I was taking the best care of myself according to the American Medical Association, and I was being treated like I was eating cakes by the pound. The only reason I didn’t go crazy was because my husband was so great. Even during the times our marriage was under strain, my husband never pressured me about my weight.
My parents were going nuts, constantly saying, “You need to do something! You need to diet!”
I told them, “This is what dieting did to me. I’m never dieting again.”
I weighed 293 pounds when I went to see Dr. Schwarzbein in December 1994. She looked at me and said, “I can help you.” She listened to me and nodded her head and believed what I told her. She validated my experience. “You’ve been trying to do everything right,” she said, “but you’ve had the wrong information.”
Dr. Schwarzbein told me to turn 180 degrees from what I believed to be true: eat fats and protein and less carbs.
Afterwards I said, “This is another crock. This is another food fad and I’m the guinea pig. Two years from now they’re going to say, ‘Oh, you know, we screwed up. You shouldn’t be doing this after all.’”
Dr. Schwarzbein wanted me to write down everything I ate. Everything hit me wrong. I kept thinking, “I’m going to do this and lose weight and gain it back. Or I’m going to eat all this fat and have a heart attack.”
